Microsoft quietly fixed broken Windows 10 jump lists

The Windows 10 wallpaper with red filter

Microsoft is informing Windows 10 users post factum about fixed issues with jump lists on the Start menu. The problem started with KB5052077, which was released on February 25, 2025, but the company has only now acknowledged its existence.

According to a recently published post on the official documentation, Microsoft received reports about users being unable to open jump-lists for apps pinned to the taskbar after installing KB5052077 or newer. For reference, jump lists are lists of quick actions and recent files that you can open by right-clicking an app on the taskbar or the Start menu. Microsoft said that the issue occurred with apps having recent files in their jump lists, like Excel or Word.

Microsoft added that the problem was caused by the rollout of the redesigned account control experience in Windows 10's Start menu:

This issue was caused by a recent feature rollout that integrates account control experiences in the Start Menu for users on Windows 10 22H2. Account control provides users with an easily accessible way to manage their accounts and helps them get the most value from their accounts. This rollout began gradually in March 2025 via Controlled Feature Rollout (CFR), which is the process of gradually rolling out new features to compatible devices.

The good news is that Microsoft had stopped the rollout on April 25, 2025, preventing the further spread of the bug and fixing it on affected systems. All Windows 10 PCs with an active internet connection automatically received the necessary patches in the background with no action required from the end-user:

This issue was resolved by a service change that was rolled out on April 25, 2025. If you are still facing this issue, please ensure that your device is connected to the internet to receive the automatic resolution that has been rolled out. After the next reboot, this issue should be resolved.

Finally, it is worth noting that affected platforms included only Windows 10 version 22H2 Home and Pro. Windows 11 was not affected.

Chicago plans more, and more equitable public charging as EV sales climb

Electric vehicles’ share of the market continues to climb in America’s second city, with BEV registrations up more than 50% in the first quarter of 2025 compared with the same period last year. Great news, but charging hasn’t up – but a new plan from Chicago Department of Transportation aims to build up enough infrastructure for the city to keep up.

In a bid to keep up with the rapid growth of EVs, Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT is currently seeking public feedback on a plan called “Chicago Moves Electric Framework.” The city’s first such plan, it outlines initiatives that include a curbside charging pilot through the city’s utility, ComEd, and expanded charging access in key areas throughout the city.

Unlike other such plans, however, the new plan aims to focus on bringing electric vehicle charging to EIEC and low income communities, too.

“Through this framework, we are setting clear goals and identifying solutions that reflect the voices of our residents, communities, and regional partners,” said CDOT Commissioner Tom Carney. “By prioritizing equity and public input, we’re creating a roadmap for electric transportation that serves every neighborhood and helps drive down emissions across Chicago.”

Neighborhoods on the south and west sides of Chicago experience a disproportionate amount of air pollution and diesel emissions, largely due to vehicle emissions according to CDOT. Despite that, most of Chicago’s public charging stations are clustered in higher-income areas while just 7.8% are in environmental justice neighborhoods that face higher environmental burdens.

“Too often, communities facing the greatest economic and transportation barriers also experience the most air pollution,” explains Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson. “By prioritizing investments in historically underserved areas and making clean transportation options more affordable and accessible, we can improve both mobility and public health.”

The Framework identifies other near-term policy objectives, as well – such as streamlining the EV charger installation process for businesses and residents and implementing “Low-Emission Zones” in areas disproportionately impacted by air pollution by limiting, or even restricting, access to conventional medium- and heavy-duty vehicles during peak hours.

The Chicago Moves Electric Framework includes the installation of Level 2 and DC fast charging stations in public locations such as libraries and Chicago’s Midway Airport, “supporting not only personal EVs but also electric taxis, ride-hail and commercial fleets.”

Chicago has a goal of installing 2,500 public passenger EV charging stations and electrifying the city’s entire municipal vehicle fleet by 2035.

I hate to sound like a bed-wetting liberal here, guys, but Chicago is getting EVs absolutely right with big utility incentives on both vehicles and infrastructure, a governor willing to stand behind smart environmental policy, and a solid push for more and better infrastructure in the areas where they’ll do the most good. They’re even thinking of the children.

Here’s hoping more cities follow suit.

Google is making TV and movies to convince you that tech is not evil

Google is reportedly spinning up a film and TV project called 100 Zeroes.

According to a report from Business Insider, this initiative is intended to make young audiences feel more positively about Google’s products, as well as tech at large. The report also states that Google is not intending to share these projects via YouTube, which it owns, or through an in-house streaming service like Apple TV. Instead, Google wants to work with existing studios for distribution.

Google clarified in a statement that this project is not a new production studio, but rather, the company’s Platforms & Devices team will be collaborating with the production company Range Media.

“We’re working with Range to assist the creative community in integrating cutting-edge technologies and platforms, like XR and AI, into their filmmaking,” Google told TechCrunch in a statement.

Signal clone used by Trump official stops operations after report it was hacked

Waltz was removed from his post late last week, with Trump nominating him to serve as ambassador to the United Nations.

TeleMessage website removes Signal mentions

The TeleMessage website until recently boasted the ability to "capture, archive and monitor mobile communication" through text messages, voice calls, WhatsApp, WeChat, Telegram, and Signal, as seen in an Internet Archive capture from Saturday. Another archived page says that TeleMessage "captures and records Signal calls, messages, deletions, including text, multimedia, [and] files," and "maintain[s] all Signal app features and functionality as well as the Signal encryption."

The TeleMessage home page currently makes no mention of Signal, and links on the page have been disabled.

The anonymous hacker who reportedly infiltrated TeleMessage told 404 Media that it took about 15 to 20 minutes and "wasn't much effort at all." While the hacker did not obtain Waltz's messages, "the hack shows that the archived chat logs are not end-to-end encrypted between the modified version of the messaging app and the ultimate archive destination controlled by the TeleMessage customer," according to 404 Media.

"Data related to Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the cryptocurrency giant Coinbase, and other financial institutions are included in the hacked material, according to screenshots of messages and backend systems obtained by 404 Media," the report said. 404 Media added that the "hacker did not access all messages stored or collected by TeleMessage, but could have likely accessed more data if they decided to, underscoring the extreme risk posed by taking ordinarily secure end-to-end encrypted messaging apps such as Signal and adding an extra archiving feature to them."
